How Procrastination Taught Me Electronics: My Journey Building a Robot Mop
What do you get when you mix a business analyst, a no-instructions Arduino 4WD robot kit, a syringe, and the overwhelming desire to never mop your floors again? Apparently, a Bluetooth-controlled autonomous robot mop — and a completely unplanned crash course in electronics. This isn't a "look what I built" talk. It's an honest, technical, and occasionally chaotic journey through learning embedded systems from scratch — from not knowing what a motor driver was, to successfully flashing my first sketch onto an ESP32, to nearly setting my parents' living room on fire by overheating a microcontroller on their couch. The blanket survived. The ESP still works. Barely...... I'll walk you through the actual build: a 4WD chassis driven by an L298N dual H-bridge motor driver, controlled by an Arduino-compatible board, with an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for obstacle avoidance. I'll talk about how I rewired everything using only jumper wires — because soldering turned out to be a skill I had to outsource to a friend — and how I learned to read a circuit diagram well enough to stop frying things. Mostly. The mop mechanism is where it gets creative: a controlled-drip syringe system feeding water onto a washcloth mounted to the chassis. The key engineering challenge? Getting the drip rate right so the cloth stays wet enough to mop, without turning your living room into a flood zone — or getting electrocuted, which would have been a very unfortunate product demo. Phone control is handled over Bluetooth, so you can drive your floor cleaner from the couch while watching TV. Because that was always the point. Along the way I'll share the real moments: the first blink test that lit up my dark room like an ambulance at 2am and took me ten minutes to turn off. The hunt for male-to-female jumper wires across an entire city — spoiler, they don't exist in Pietermaritzburg, but the China Mall had something that sort of worked. The airport security officers who somehow didn't question a bag full of loose wires, motors, and a syringe. And the moment the motors actually moved for the first time — both sides, in the right direction — which was, genuinely, one of the most exciting things I've ever experienced. This talk is for anyone who has ever stood in a room full of engineers and thought "that's not for me." It's proof that with an Arduino, a community forum, Claude, and a reasonably high tolerance for mild electrical hazard, you can build something real..... and eventually mop your floors.
