Jesse van der Merwe is an electrical engineer, game designer and frontend software developer based in Johannesburg. She works on large-scale platforms across Africa and is completing a Master's degree at Wits University. Her interests sit at the intersection of engineering, interaction design, game design and human behaviour. Outside work, Jesse enjoys building everything from game prototypes to real-world installations – and climbing mountains whenever she gets the chance.

From using machine learning to analyse a digital puzzle game, to building a small real-world interactive arcade experience, this talk explores how ‘interaction’ reveals meaningful behavioural signals. These signals can help us understand what gets lost when we only look at outcomes, and how carefully we need to interpret what happens in between.
